STORY OF
HK MILK TEA

Let’s admit it. We were all addicted to Chinese tea back in the days.

During the British colonial period, the Hong Kong folks picked up British’s habit of having afternoon tea. However, tea, milk and sugar were considered to be upper class luxury. The Hong Kongers had to create their own local brew by mixing a few types of black tea, evaporated milk and condensed milk to make it an affordable treat!

The accidental formula then brings the rich, creamy flavour and sweetness in Lai Cha. Yummmmm. Milk tea making has now become an artisanship and a signature drink in Hong Kong after decades of evolution.

“Lai Cha” is our indispensable daily pick-me-up.
2.5 millions cups of Lai Cha are consumed daily in HK and Lai Cha was listed as one of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage.

“Silk-stocking” milk tea…!?

Wait - let’s listen to the story before you smell the “tight”.

In 1950s, Cha-chaan-teng (Hong Kong style cafe) and bing-sutt (ice room) were opened to meet the demand for English afternoon tea amongst the HK working class.

It was the time when ‘silk stocking’ milk tea was invented - which is nicknamed because the tea is repeatedly filtered during the tea pouring process in a sackcloth strainer. This is also the secret to the tea’s silky and fine texture!
